Rio Grande Wild Turkey
Meleagris gallopavo, Greiner Ranch, Kerr County, Texas
The brilliance of God’s creation can be seen when the Rio Grande Wild Turkey expands 6,000 iridescence feathers. This spectacle occurs each spring when a tom attracts a hen. He “struts his stuff” while making a loud gobble sound. Gobblers gather hens into flocks. The Gobblers, white, red and blue head changes color when a female approaches.Turkeys prefer to walk rather than fly. The wily bird takes to the air only when pressed by predators or terrain. A Gobbler stands 40” tall and can weigh up to 21 lbs. The historic center of the bird’s range is the Texas Hill Country.
