Texas Armadillo
Dasypus novemcinctus, Greiner Ranch, Kerr County, Texas
One of the best known critters in Texas is the Nine-banded Armadillo. The “Official State Small Mammal” often becomes a “Texas Speed bump” because of its poor eyesight and hearing. The primarily nocturnal insectivore eats ants, grubs, worms and termites. Weighing up to 12 pounds, with a total length of 30 inches, the solitary creature digs burrows with its
claws. When frightened the armor-plated, leathery animal can jump straight up to 4 feet in the air, and swim if needed!
