Black-tailed Jackrabbit
Lepus californicus, Greiner Ranch, Kerr County, Texas
The Black-tailed Jackrabbit is a favorite in the Hill Country. The odd-looking mammal can outrun most predators, if it is not ambushed. The animals are classified scientifically as hares because of their big ears, long legs and because their young are born fully haired, with their eyes open. Rabbits are born furless with their eyes closed. Litters are born up to six time a year. Hares can run up to 40 mph and jump 40’ high. The animals grow to 24” in length, and weigh up to 9 lbs. The plant eating herbivores range across the western USA, primarily in open grassy areas, where predators can be spotted at a great distance.
