White-Tailed Fawn
Odocoileus virginianus, Greiner Ranch, Kerr County, Texas
Over five million “Whitetails” live in Texas. The vast majority reside in the Hill Country.
Each spring female deer called does, give birth to one to three fawns, depending on the range conditions. This occurs after the mating season (“rut”) in the fall. After birth, new fawns learn to hide from predators. However, in the Texas Hill Country they must outrun coyotes, bobcats and cougars. Whitetails live in a small area less than a square mile, since they are adaptable and not migratory.
