The Guadalupe River is famous for sparkling water and dramatic limestone outcroppings. Fed by the Edwards Aquifer, the pristine waterway starts near Hunt. It flows 230 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. The river is lined with massive, Bald Cypress trees. These trees drew early pioneers, like Joshua D. Brown, to mill the wood into shingles for customers in San
Antonio, 60 miles away. Kerr County was established in 1856 by Major James Kerr, a friend of Brown. The Guadalupe has Class III rapids in some sections, which have been a favorite of canoers and kayakers for generations. More children’s summer camps exist within a 50-mile radius of Kerrville than anywhere else in the USA. Founded in 1921, Camp Rio Vista is the oldest summer camp in the Southwest.
